Can someone help explain to me why there are discrete lines in the line emission spectrum of compounds?

i need a very detailed explanation cause i need help in my formal lab's discussion section. by the way in this experiment there are various compounds then we used a flame test and viewed the flame with the solution with spectroscopes.
