"Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" (the book) question.?

In "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" what is the signifigance of Tom Riddle? Is he like Voldemorts father, or is he a Death Eater that came back to life (or maybe he isn't dead, I don't know), or is he just possed by Voldemort? Please explain. Thanks a Bunches!!!
